winter solstice/yule

The Winter Solstice is a specific date and time each year.  Yule is a season that overlaps Winter Solstice.  Different pagan traditions make a bigger deal about the Winter Solstice than others.  Many of the signs and symbols of the season have been incorporated into Christmas and other holidays.  It is hard to know exactly which have their roots in pagan observances, but it is safe to say that many did.

And in the absence of details in the account s of the birth of Jesus in the Bible, the Chritians may have picked the time of other popular celebrations to make the shift to Christianity not as difficult.

The rituals associated with the Winter Solstice were developed to entice and celebrate the days to lengthen.  When the days grow longer the harvest is possible.

Yule has its roots in northern European practices.
